Implicarea Statelor Unite \u00een r\u0103zboiul din Vietnam a condus la un sentiment de vinov\u0103\u021bie r\u0103sfr\u00eent \u00eentr-o politic\u0103 de sprijin a refugia\u021bilor (un t\u00een\u0103r refugiat vietnamez salvat de pe o ambarca\u021biune \u00een Marea Chinei de Sud prime\u0219te un tutore american), de aici \u015fi natura problemelor protagoni\u0219tilor lui Nguyen, care duc o via\u021b\u0103 a\u0219ezat\u0103, cu totul \u00een afara cercului violen\u021bei imigran\u021bilor hispanici, spre exemplu. Elementul etnic apare \u00een fiecare povestire, dar nu este un element de conflict social per se.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De fapt, povestirile lui Nguyen au ca protagoni\u0219ti refugia\u021bii care \u015fi-au f\u0103cut deja o via\u021b\u0103 \u00een America \u015fi a c\u0103ror suferin\u021b\u0103 este aproape \u00eentotdeauna \u00eentoars\u0103 \u00eenspre trecut, \u00eenspre trauma r\u0103zboiului de care au fugit: o mam\u0103 \u015fi o fiic\u0103 primesc stafia fiului\/fratelui mort \u00een \u00eencercarea de a fugi din Vietnam; un cuplu vietnamez \u00een v\u00eerst\u0103 se confrunt\u0103 cu demen\u021ba so\u021bului care evoc\u0103 o figur\u0103 misterioas\u0103 din trecut; o femeie str\u00eenge bani \u00een comunitate pentru a finan\u021ba gherilele anti-comuniste de acas\u0103 unde a r\u0103mas s\u0103 lupte so\u021bul ei; un american prime\u0219te \u00een urma unui transplant organul unui vietnamez \u015fi pleac\u0103 \u00een c\u0103utarea familiei acestuia; un alt american, veteran de r\u0103zboi c\u0103s\u0103torit cu o refugiat\u0103, nu se \u00eempac\u0103 cu decizia fiicei sale de a face munc\u0103 voluntar\u0103 \u00een \u021bara pe care el odat\u0103 o bombardase; un refugiat se rec\u0103s\u0103tore\u0219te \u00een America dar pune copiilor lui numele copiilor din prima c\u0103s\u0103torie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u0219adar, problema refugia\u021bilor lui Nguyen nu o constituie supravie\u021buirea \u00een prezent, ci vie\u021buirea cu trecutul care \u00eei b\u00eentuie: ororile r\u0103zboiului, \u015fi nu violen\u021ba str\u0103zii; veterani de r\u0103zboi la v\u00eersta a doua, \u015fi nu tineri trafican\u021bi de droguri; copii din c\u0103s\u0103torii mixte, \u015fi nu copii din c\u0103s\u0103torii paralele; \u00een fine, pe un fundal mai ap\u0103sat politic dec\u00eet social. Acest din urm\u0103 aspect datorat \u0219i faptului c\u0103 prozatorul pred\u0103 studii americane la universitate \u0219i, totodat\u0103, este autorul unor lucr\u0103ri academice cu titluri precum <em>Race and Resistance: Literature and Politics in Asian America<\/em> (2002) sau <em>Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War<\/em> (2016).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Povestirile lui Viet Thanh Nguyen vorbesc despre vulnerabilitate \u015fi dislocare, despre identitate \u015fi reconciliere, despre integrare \u015fi conflicte culturale, despre dinamica familiei dezr\u0103d\u0103cinate, \u0219i o face \u201epe limba lui\u201d, cu discre\u021bie asiatic\u0103.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Romanul premiat cu Pulitzer <em>Simpatizantul,<\/em> care l-a propulsat pe autor pe orbita literar\u0103 interna\u021bional\u0103, are acum o continuare, <em>Devotatul,<\/em> \u00een care protagonistul f\u0103r\u0103 nume, fost anchetator \u00eentr-un lag\u0103r de reeducare comunist, p\u0103r\u0103se\u0219te America \u0219i, pe urmele mo\u0219tenirii paterne franceze, se stabile\u0219te la Paris, unde devine traficant de droguri \u00een cercurile desfr\u00eenate ale intelectualilor de st\u00eenga. Cu ocazia traducerii \u00een limba rom\u00e2n\u0103 a acestei a treia sale c\u0103r\u021bi, Editura ART \u00eel va aduce pe Viet Thanh Nguyen la Bucure\u0219ti \u00eentr-un eveniment public joi, 6 iulie, de la ora 18:00, la Caf\u00e9 Verona, unde, al\u0103turi de autor, vor mai participa la discu\u021bie Victor Cobuz, Monica Cure, Mihaela Dedeoglu \u0219i R\u0103zvan \u021aupa, cu Iulian Bocai \u00een chip de moderator.
