S-a n\u0103scut \u00een ora\u0219ul sicilian Catania, \u00eentr-o familie de orientare antifascist\u0103. Mama ei, Maria Guidice, a fost una dintre figurile proeminente ale mi\u0219c\u0103rii socialiste italiene, iar tat\u0103l ei, Peppino Sapienza, un cunoscut avocat socialist. La 16 ani, Goliarda s-a mutat la Roma \u00eempreun\u0103 cu mama ei, pentru a studia la Academia de Arte Dramatice. La doi ani de la dispari\u021bia Goliardei Sapienza, so\u021bul acesteia, Angelo Pellegrino, a finan\u021bat publicarea integral\u0103 a o mie de exemplare din <em>Arta bucuriei <\/em>de c\u0103tre Editura Stampa Alternativa, f\u0103r\u0103 prea mare succes de v\u00e2nz\u0103ri. C\u00e2\u021biva ani mai t\u00e2rziu, Pellegrino trimite c\u00e2teva exemplare din carte la T\u00e2rgul Interna\u021bional de Carte din Frankfurt, unde romanul este remarcat de un editor german, care, consider\u00e2ndu-l o capodoper\u0103 care merit\u0103 redescoperit\u0103, aranjeaz\u0103 publicarea lui. Editorul german \u00eel transmite, la r\u00e2ndul s\u0103u, unui editor din Fran\u021ba, unde cartea este publicat\u0103 imediat, \u00eenregistr\u00e2nd un important succes de critic\u0103 \u0219i de v\u00e2nz\u0103ri: peste 300.000 de exemplare v\u00e2ndute, la scurt timp de la lansare.
