Protagoni\u0219tii s\u00eent, cu o singur\u0103 excep\u021bie, imigran\u021bi indieni din Boston, imediat dup\u0103 stabilirea \u00een State, confrunta\u021bi cu adaptarea la noul statut \u0219i cu standardul de via\u021b\u0103 precar, sau ajun\u0219i deja la a doua genera\u021bie, confrunta\u021bi \u00eens\u0103 cu necunoscutele originii (harta este un motiv recurent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prozele \u201ede dragoste\u201d abordeaz\u0103 destr\u0103marea intimit\u0103\u021bii, acceptarea necunoa\u0219terii celuilalt, a distan\u021b\u0103rii \u00een rela\u021bie \u0219i a adulterului. \u00cen timpul unor \u00eentreruperi temporare de curent electric, un cuplu care au pierdut un copil \u00eencearc\u0103 un joc al confesiunii, spun\u00eendu-\u0219i \u00een fiecare sear\u0103 c\u00eete un mic secret, doar pentru a descoperi adev\u0103rata amploare a \u00eenstr\u0103in\u0103rii dintre ei \u2013 jocul, aparent un preludiu al reapropierii, fiind, de fapt, epilogul rela\u021biei lor. \u00cen timpul unei vacan\u021be \u00een India, so\u021bia \u00eei m\u0103rturise\u0219te abrupt \u0219oferului-ghid c\u0103 unul dintre copiii ei este rezultatul unui adulter ocazional de care so\u021bul ei n-a aflat niciodat\u0103 \u0219i-i cere un \u201eremediu\u201d \u2013 confesiune cumva trivial\u0103 pe care \u0219oferul (interpret de maladii, adic\u0103 translatorul doctorului unui spital regional unde vin pacien\u021bi vorbitori de dialecte) o pune mai degrab\u0103 pe seama vinov\u0103\u021biei dec\u00eet a \u201edurerii\u201d. \u00centr-o alt\u0103 proz\u0103, o t\u00een\u0103r\u0103 devine amanta de duminic\u0103 a unui b\u0103rbat \u00eensurat, asta p\u00een\u0103 c\u00eend se recunoa\u0219te \u00een \u201einterpretarea\u201d seac\u0103 a atrac\u021biei sexuale oferite indirect de b\u0103ie\u021belul unei prietene tocmai p\u0103r\u0103site de so\u021b pentru o alt\u0103 femeie. \u00cen alt\u0103 proz\u0103, un so\u021b este contrariat de comportamentul proaspetei sale so\u021bii dup\u0103 ce aceasta face o pasiune, inexplicabil\u0103 \u0219i deranjant\u0103, pentru obiectele de cult cre\u0219tin g\u0103site \u00een casa unde tocmai s-au mutat pentru a-\u0219i \u00eencepe via\u021ba \u00eempreun\u0103.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Cel mai tragic personaj este t\u00een\u0103ra de aproape treizeci de ani, orfan\u0103, bolnav\u0103 \u0219i neatr\u0103g\u0103toare, din \u201eTratamentul lui Bibi Haldar\u201d (singura proz\u0103 plasat\u0103 \u00een India).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Prozele \u201ede imigra\u021bie\u201d ofer\u0103 personaje mai complexe, unele memorabile. \u00cen \u201ePe c\u00eend venea domnul Pirzada la cin\u0103\u201d, un b\u0103rbat bengalez musulman, aflat \u00een State cu o burs\u0103 de cercetare \u00een toamna lui 1972, se apropie de o familie de imigran\u021bi bengalezi hindu\u0219i pentru a urm\u0103ri \u00eempreun\u0103 \u0219tirile legate de r\u0103zboiul de diviziune recent izbucnit \u00een India, unde r\u0103m\u0103seser\u0103 so\u021bia \u0219i fiicele lui, de la care nu mai are nici o veste. Povestea acestei apropieri interetnice conjuncturale dincolo de grani\u021bele originii comune este rememorat\u0103 de fosta feti\u021b\u0103 a familiei de imigran\u021bi care, la vreme respectiv\u0103, nu \u00een\u021belegea diferen\u021bele \u0219i dedesubturile politice ale conflictului. \u00cen \u201eLa doamna Sen\u201d, o t\u00een\u0103r\u0103 mam\u0103 singur\u0103 o angajeaz\u0103 ca doic\u0103 pentru fiul ei elev de \u0219coal\u0103 primar\u0103 pe so\u021bia unui profesor universitar, imigrant\u0103 neconsolat\u0103 cu via\u021ba \u00een State, unde nu se poate obi\u0219nui cu lipsa familiei l\u0103rgite, a obi\u0219nuin\u021belor buc\u0103t\u0103riei de acas\u0103 sau cu \u0219ofatul pe partea dreapt\u0103.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cel mai tragic personaj este \u00eens\u0103 t\u00een\u0103ra de aproape treizeci de ani, orfan\u0103, bolnav\u0103 \u0219i neatr\u0103g\u0103toare, din \u201eTratamentul lui Bibi Haldar\u201d (singura proz\u0103 plasat\u0103 \u00een India), care sufer\u0103, pe de o parte, din cauza tratamentului crud din partea veri\u0219orului \u00een grija c\u0103reia se afl\u0103; pe de alt\u0103 parte, de lipsa de perspectiv\u0103 \u00een ceea ce prive\u0219te c\u0103s\u0103toria \u0219i sexul, perceput ca singurul tratament eficient pentru crizele ei f\u0103r\u0103 leac. \u00cen cele din urm\u0103, femeia na\u0219te un copil din flori (posibil rodul unui viol), statut care o dezonoreaz\u0103, salv\u00eendu-i \u00eens\u0103 via\u021ba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acest remarcabil volum, aflat acum la reeditare, dup\u0103 publicarea \u00een 2007 \u00eentr-o alt\u0103 traducere \u0219i cu titlul articulat nehot\u0103r\u00eet, se adaug\u0103 unei excelente serii de volume de proz\u0103 scurt\u0103 pe tema condi\u021biei imigran\u021bilor, traduse la noi \u00een ultimii trei ani: Junot D\u00edaz, <em>Sufocare<\/em> \u0219i Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, <em>Ce sim\u0163i \u00een jurul g\u00eetului, <\/em>(ambeleap\u0103rute la Black Button Books) \u0219i Viet Thanh Nguyen, <em>Refugia\u0163i <\/em>(Editura ART). R\u0103m\u00eene s\u0103 a\u0219tept\u0103m \u0219i traducerea celuilalt volum de proz\u0103 scurt\u0103, de asemenea premiat, al Jhumpei Lahiri (<em>Unaccustomed Earth<\/em>, 2008).
