A\u0219a cum Groff \u00eens\u0103\u0219i a fost editoarea invitat\u0103 s\u0103 fac\u0103 selec\u021bia pentru edi\u021bia <em>The Best American Short Stories 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00centr-adev\u0103r, o bun\u0103 parte dintre povestiri s\u00eent plasate \u00een mediul tropical din Florida, caracterizat de vegeta\u021bia abundent\u0103, c\u0103ldur\u0103, umiditate \u0219i populat cu o vast\u0103 varietate de insecte, p\u0103s\u0103ri \u0219i, mai ales, reptile, alte c\u00eeteva urm\u0103rind personaje plecate sau fugite \u00een Salvador sau Fran\u021ba. Personaje feminine, c\u0103ci Lauren Groff, ca multe alte autoare din genera\u021bia ei, incorporeaz\u0103 \u00een fic\u021biune temele politice predilecte ale zilei: feminism, privilegii de clas\u0103, imigra\u021bie, clim\u0103. Cu o singur\u0103 excep\u021bie, povestirile au protagoniste femei, b\u0103rba\u021bii exist\u0103 doar ca personaje ter\u021biare, absenteaz\u0103 de l\u00eeng\u0103 femei, atunci c\u00eend nu lipsesc cu totul din peisaj.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De altfel, proza de deschidere, \u201eGoluri \u0219i n\u0103luci\u201d, marcheaz\u0103 clar acest teritoriu \u00een care femeile pleac\u0103, fug, se rup de l\u00eeng\u0103 b\u0103rba\u021bi: o so\u021bie, mam\u0103 a doi b\u0103ie\u021bi, pleac\u0103 \u00een fiecare sear\u0103 de acas\u0103, d\u00eend raite lungi printr-un cartier nu foarte sigur, pentru a putea face fa\u021b\u0103 vie\u021bii \u0219i lumii. \u201eCasa mea cea c\u0103lduroas\u0103 e \u0219i mai plin\u0103 de primejdii. \u00cen timpul zilei, c\u00eend b\u0103ie\u021bii s\u00eent la \u0219coal\u0103, citesc articole despre toate dezastrele care lovesc lumea, ghe\u021barii care mor \u00eentocmai ca ni\u0219te fiin\u021be vii, marea insul\u0103 de gunoaie din Pacific, sutele de specii care se sting chiar f\u0103r\u0103 ca cineva s\u0103 le fi descoperit \u00eenc\u0103, milenii de via\u021b\u0103 \u0219terse de parc\u0103 n-ar avea nici o valoare. Un b\u0103rbat refuz\u0103 s\u0103-\u0219i v\u00eend\u0103 domeniul ml\u0103\u0219tinos \u00een jurul c\u0103ruia au loc ample dezvolt\u0103ri imobiliare, risc\u00eend s\u0103 devin\u0103, asemenea tat\u0103lui s\u0103u, victima s\u0103lb\u0103ticiei pe care o prezerv\u0103 (\u201e\u00cen col\u021burile imaginare ale p\u0103m\u00eentului nostru rotund\u201d). Este o proz\u0103 scris\u0103 admirabil prin felul \u00een care descrie \u00een detaliu spulberarea lumii la propriu \u0219i la figurat. Cealalt\u0103 proz\u0103, \u201ePentru Dumnezeul iubirii, pentru iubirea de Dumnezeu\u201d, mi-a atras aten\u021bia prin dinamica personajelor, tensiunea situa\u021biei \u0219i extinderea planului narativ: o femeie, \u00eenso\u021bit\u0103 de iubitul ei care se preg\u0103te\u0219te \u00een secret s\u0103 o p\u0103r\u0103seasc\u0103, \u00ee\u0219i viziteaz\u0103 \u00een Fran\u021ba rural\u0103 prietena din adolescen\u021b\u0103, purt\u00eend acum un nume fran\u021buzit \u0219i m\u0103ritat\u0103 \u00eentre timp cu un baron elve\u021bian sc\u0103p\u0103tat \u0219i bolnav, cu care a f\u0103cut \u0219i un copil.
